This week’s guest on Playmakers with Dick Smith is Ted Bulthaup, owner of the Hollywood Palms and the Hollywood Blvd. These theaters go the extra mile. From planning special events with celebrities to meticulously decorating each of his theaters, he makes customers remember his venues as much as they remember the movies.
Hollywood Blvd was named by Chicago Magazine as “Best Cinema” in its first year of operation, even beating out the new $30,000,000 AMC/Imax downtown. The facility was the only theater to receive an “A+” rating by the Chicago Sun Times and was also named as one of the nation’s top ten new concepts by Restaurant Business Magazine. More people typically attend movies at this theater in a year than attend Soldier Field to see the Chicago Bears play
The sister theater to the Hollywood Boulevard Cinema in Woodridge (the former Woodgrove Festival Cinema), the Hollywood Palms Cinema opened September 24, 2009. Opened six years after the Hollywood Boulevard, both movie houses are operated by Ted Bulthaup as cinema and dining/drinking venues. Patrons sit at tables in high back leather chairs and are waited on by servers during the film. Each of the Palms’ seven auditoriums has a different theme (ie; Chinese, Mayan, Egyptian and even Wizard of Oz!). Like its sister theatre, the Palms will also screen classic films in addition to first-run features, and host film festivals and guest appearances by Hollywood stars. Along other walls in the space movie-goers can see autographed pictures from over 300 different celebrities who have visited the theater since its opening, stars like Dan Aykroyd, Jennifer Hudson, Mickey Rooney, Richard Dreyfuss, Debbie Reynolds, Michelle Pfeifer, and Paris Hilton.
